Description:
A 1902 Magazine Lee Enfield Mark I* manufactured by the London Small Arms Company on an order from the State of New South Wales. This company produced the least number of MLE I* at approximately 74,000.
The rifle bears the NSW ownership stamp and inventory number 7838 on the barrel knox and butt. The butt and all components bear the LSA Co ownership roundel or X mark.
In the 1930's a Lithgow MLE profile barrel, with the correct front sight was fitted. As there are sold out of service marks on the barrel, it may be that this through a refurbishment program in the 1930's of MLE's in store. There is a 6 31 stamp on the butt that may be the inspection date after the barrel was fitted. The barrel was numbered to the action and bolt. The front sight has been refurbished to accept a SMLE front sight blade. The for-end has a repair.
At some time T.A.R. has been stamped into the left hand side of the butt?
An interesting rifle that was produced on order for the New South Wales Government and as per other Magazine Lee Enfield’s kept in their armoury into the 1930’s. Some were issued to the Australian Civilian Military Forces in 1939/1940 as weapons for defence.
