Description:
A classic and less common Winchester lever action for sale. This rifle was restored by Kingston Bros Gunsmiths in West End (Brisbane) in the mid 1960s. It was rebarrelled in 303 British at the time. My father told me a Lewis Gun barrel was used, though I cannot sunstantiate this. It has a heavy 26" barrel marked "Sportco 303".
Unfortunately it was stored lying on its right side on carpet in a cupboard after Mr Howard decreed that such dangerous items could no longer be displayed on a gun rack in the lounge room. The consequent rust was removed carefully soon after, but the pitting and worn blueing are evidence of the storage trauma and are quite visible in the photos.
The bore was not effected and is very good to excellent. The action is very smooth and shows no sign of wear. The woodwork shows some patina, but is nicely figured with a good wax shine. A small crack in the butt at the lower end of the buttplate has been repaired long ago.
I fired ten rounds through soon after inheriting it in 2002, cleaned it, and it has been in the safe ever since. The rifle is in top mechanical condition and is suitable for frequent use if you can stand the combination of recoil and a very curved buttplate.
The Serial Number suggests that it was made in 1899. If you would like to add an unusual Winchester lever gun made the century before last to your collection - this might be it.

4. Set aside a day to enjoy some admiring, classic shooting and cleaning.
